Frequently Asked Questions
7. What voice does the Lutheran
church lend to discussion and debate about the Farm Bill?
"Agriculture is basic to the survival and security of people
throughout the world. Through the calling of agriculture, farmers
produce the grain for our daily bread and the rest of our food
supply."
"Sufficiency urges us to care for arable land so that
sufficient food and fiber continue to be available to meet human
needs. We affirm, therefore, the many stewards of the land who
have been and are conserving the good earth that the Lord has
given us."1
The social
statements of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
strongly support an agricultural policy that :
- Helps farms and farmers in the U.S. and around the globe
- Sustains rural communities
- Protects God's creation from degradation
- Ensures an abundant supply of food for all.
Our social statements and churchwide assembly actions compel us
to work for a renewal of the federal Farm Bill that fulfills these
goals.
You can lend your voice as a person of faith and join the
ELCA in using its public voice to impact change on the Farm Bill.

community working to see a reformed farm bill, achieve change in the
federal government's food, land and hunger policies, and lift up the
voices of those who are hungry or struggling to build community and
support their families. Participating in a Faith Farm team provides
you with farm bill updates and information about how to be a
grassroots farm bill reform advocate, including writing letters to
your members of Congress, contacting local media, meeting with
congressional staff and spreading the word.
