Despite the fact that the United States is one of the wealthiest and
resource-rich nations in the world, the social ills of
hunger and poverty persist within its borders, and even continue to grow.
Poverty is both a social and economic issue, inextricably linked with employment, food security, housing,
transportation, and many other issues. ELCA World Hunger
works with governmental and corporate advocacy leaders to
build grassroots networks and advocate with and for the poor
and hungry people of the United States and around the world.

During his report to the 2007 ELCA
Churchwide Assembly on Aug. 8, the Rev. Mark S. Hanson
urged, "We need to speak the truth about what our
consumptive living is doing to an environment that is
now on the verge of ecocide - self-destruction. We need
to speak the truth that violence begets violence, the
truth that living in abject poverty as so much of the
world does is not God's will for humanity. By 2012, may
the world be well on the way to achieving the MDGs,
which will have been advocated by thousands and
thousands of ELCA members who have joined the ONE
